SANTA & D’SAS – YARRA VALLEY CHARDONNAY 2017
The Santa & D’Sas approach with the Ampersand Series of wines is to harness the strength and characteristics of each region to create varietal expressive wines. Sourced from the mature, cool-climate Langbrook Vineyard planted in 1997 in the Upper Yarra Valley outside Yarra Junction, this Yarra Valley Chardonnay is a focused expression of freshness, finesse and elegance. Parcels of Chardonnay were chosen for their flavour intensity, expression of vineyard character and mineral acidity.
Fruit for the this Chardonnay is 100% sourced from the Langbrook Vineyard, Yarra Junction in the Yarra Valley Wine Region.
The winter of 2016 was cold with above average rain events recorded. This meant vineyard soils were at full moisture. Flowering coincided with a period of rainfall and strong cold winds resulting in some fruit set issues, particularly in the most wind exposed blocks – setting up the vintage for lower yields. A cool and even Spring ensured the vines enjoyed a good, even growing season. January, February and March conditions – cool/mild days and cold nights, evenly balanced crops and excellent vine health resulting in intense flavour development and beautiful natural acidity.
This wine was wild fermented slowly at cool temperatures in a combination of new and older very tight grained French barriques oak and matured on lees for 11 months. with fortnightly stirring. Traditional winemaking techniques were used including hand picking, whole bunch pressing, wild fermentation, regular lees stirring and maturation on lees. This Chardonnay will age beautifully over the next 8 — 12 years.
Pale gold with hints of green hues.
Aromas of intense white and yellow peach, jasmine flowers, apple and beautiful almond and cinnamon oak notes.
The 2017 Chardonnay has a long and rich palate with intense stone fruit and citrus flavours layered with seamless French oak. A beautifully balanced wine that displays great fruit purity and exceptional natural acidity leads to a powerful, crisp finish.
